Jan. 18 – Jan. 23
This week you will set up the tools we need for the course to run smoothly, and you get to know each other and the big outlines of Korean history.
Check out a card-table view of the assignments on the Assignments page for a quick overview. The hyperlinks there take you back here. Let me know how I can improve that feature.
Good to know:
- This page use “Accordion menus”: click on the title (“Monday, 11:59PM”) or on the little + sign to open up the details. [If you don’t like this set-up, let me know and I can change things.]
- All times are listed in “Muhlenberg time” (Eastern Standard Time)
By Tuesday, 11:59PM –– Join the Discord server Dr D’s Classes Spring 2022
Time estimate: 30 mins (or longer if you are chatty in the text channels)
- Add yourself to the Discord Server Dr. D’s Spring 2022 classes. You have received an email with an invitation link, but you don’t need to use that email address to register. Please follow these instructions. (Google Doc to preserve server link privacy)
- I’ll add you to the right role as soon as I can, and you will see your course channels (text and voice) activate as soon as I do. If that does not happen within 24hrs of you joining the server: email me to remind me. (Thanks!)
- In the Text channel #hst259-classroom, add an image that is meaningful to you, and that you’d like to share with the class (can be picture of you/family/holiday/pet, but also art work, object,…). Add your preferred name to address you in class. (I know nobody is Lord Buckethead, he’s in the UK and not signed up at the College!) Explain why the image is meaningful, and anything else you’d like us to know at the start of this semester.
- Say hello to your new classmates! Pop back in on the channel later in the day, make yourself comfy and chat away 😀
- You can also visit and post in the #off-topic-chat room and share things with students from my other courses.
By Tuesday 11:59PM –– Set up your Bergbuilds website and make your first WordPress post
Time estimate: 40-60 mins
Set up your personal Domain/blog! Use the instructions on the webpage: Set up your blog and create a first post.
This looks more complicated than it is, but I have faith in you! If you really can’t make this work after about 15-20 minutes or so, the Digital Learning team will be able to help you. I know that sometimes computers just don’t cooperate and that sucks. The DL Team is in Trexler Library, B06 (opposite the elevators). They’re really cool to know anyway, you should all visit the Hive in Trexler Library at some point.

Wednesday 11AM –– First class meeting [on Discord]
Time estimate: 45 mins [I try to keep video meetings under 60 mins but am often too excited about course content and go over…]
We meet at 11am for a first meeting: join us with video, voice only, or chat. I will talk you through the outline of the course and the major project.
Please note: I can’t answer specific tech questions about your blog during this session: I don’t have the expertise to offer remote tech support!
By Thursday 11:59PM –– Set up (or reactivate) your Hypothes.is account
Time estimate: 45 mins (15 for set up, 30 for syllabus reading)
- Set up or reactivate your Hypothes.is account
- Follow these instructions; make sure to join the right group: HST259 (Korean history)
- Remember to annotate the syllabus. If you have questions, comments, suggestions, I am more than happy to make changes to accommodate the needs of individuals or the group as a whole, as you will see in the syllabus!
Friday, 11AM –– Optional meeting on Discord
Questions? Suggestions? Seeking reassurance? Just want to hang out and chat (voice or text) about Korean history and your favorite Korean food? I’ll be online in our Voice Channel HST259 on Discord 11am-12pm. “Come when you can, leave when you must!” (memes, pictures of pets, and other silliness welcome)
By Friday, 11.59PM –– Check out the students’ textbook
Time estimate: 1 hour
- Browse through the Korean history textbook your predecessors created in Spring 2020 (yes, in that first horrible pandemic semester. Isn’t it amazing what they accomplished??)
- Click on “Read Book”, then in “Contents” you can click on the + symbol and select chapters.
- Which chapters or topics speak to you? Which sucked you in and got you reading? What topics are you now thinking about taking a closer look at? Are you changing your idea about what a history project or paper is as a result of this?
- Add your thoughts and comments to the Discord channel #hst259-classroom, and keep the conversation flowing
FEEDBACK: Please help me improve the time estimates provided by filling out this google form.
Congratulations! You made it through the first week!
